4 Kids Acquires Yu-Gi-Oh 4 Kids Entertainment, the company that brought Pokemon to the US is now bringing over the fad that killed Pokemon in Japan, Yu-Gi-Oh Dual Monsters.
4 Kids has licensed the translation, distribution and merchandising rights to the franchise for marketing outside of Asia. The Yu-Gi-Oh license includes a 27 episode TV series, manga, a best selling franchise of Nintendo and Playstation games, and a collectable card game with such a following that some rare cards have actually sold for over a thousand dollars each in Japan.
The official 4 Kids press release summarized the series this way: "Yu Gi Oh is the story of a boy named Yuugi Mutou who must defeat the Game King from the Millenium Puzzle by defeat[ing] him in a series of games. A reoccurring game played by Yuugi and his rival Kaiba is "Magic and Wizards," a cross between Magic: The
Gathering and Pokemon."
